Best Places to Acclimatize on the Lahaul Spiti Road Trip
In this Lahaul Spiti tour, you can acclimatize in many places. Acclimatization is a gradual process, and it is a wrong assumption that it should be done only once. In this process, you allow your body to rest and adapt itself to the decrease in oxygen levels at high altitudes. We have designed the Lahaul Spiti from Shimla tour in such a way that you get multiple places and stopovers in which you can acclimatize your body.

You have now entered the high altitude territory of Spiti Valley. Tabo is located at 3280 meters, and at this height, you will experience dry air and low oxygen content in the air. You should keep your activities light and allow the body to adjust to the altitude. You may experience some fatigue and a mild headache.

This will be a better way for acclimatization as you are gradually increasing the altitude gain instead of a rapid rise in altitude.
Keylong (3,080m) – Recovery Phase
You have now braved the high altitudes of Spiti Valley. Now it is time to come down and descend. At Keylong, you have entered the Lahaul Valley. The body will start to recover, and oxygen levels will start to improve. It will result in less fatigue, and you will feel energized.

The Langza Village is famous for its marine fossils. You can view these marine fossils with a local guide, who will take you to the places where they are to be found. The locals have gathered these fossils and even sell them to tourists for a price. The fossils at Langza are a result of geological activities that have shaped the landscape and buried the marine creatures in the process.

Why Choose a Kinnaur Spiti Valley Tour over other Himalayan Trips
You may argue why visit Lahaul Spiti when it is nothing but a cold desert? There are no forests there, nor are there any types of historical landmarks. This is true, but the landscape of Lahaul Spiti is one that you will not find anywhere else in India. Lahaul and Spiti Valleys are the only places with a cold desert in India, other than Leh Ladakh. There are other obvious reasons why you should choose the Lahaul Spiti tour over other normal Himalayan hill stations and destinations.
- The Kinnaur route to Lahaul Spiti is one where you will find it easy to acclimatize. This is because the altitude does not change suddenly, but there is a gradual increase in altitude. The Lahaul Spiti road trip takes you through the historic Hindustan Tibet Highway. This highway is very scenic with dramatic Himalayan scenery. You will get to see Tibetan monasteries, deep gorges, narrow mountainous roads, and high altitude passes.
- You will get to visit the maximum number of places on this Shimla to Lahaul Spiti tour. The route to Spiti Valley goes through the Kinnaur region, which has lush valleys and apple orchards. The Sutlej River flows almost parallel to the route. The views of the river gorges of the Sutlej River will thrill you with its views. You can also view the barren mountain vistas of the Trans Himalayan Mountain range. You can view larger-than-life landscapes in the Kinnaur region. The Kinnaur Kailash range is clearly visible, apart from the Jorkanden mountain peak.
- The Lahaul Spiti Valleys are not as crowded as the other popular places like Shimla, Manali, Rohtang Pass, Solang Valley, etc. Fewer crowds will make you more comfortable when visiting villages or going on nature walks.
- The Shimla to Manali road trip goes through the Atal Tunnel, where you will not need any permits. Moreover, you will not need any special permits for Kaza and Spiti Valley, whereas if you are going through Rohtang Pass, you will need a special Rohtang Pass Permit.
- The Kinnaur route to visit Spiti Valley is open almost all year round, save during heavy snowfall. Compared to that, the Manali route is not open from October to May. So, it gives you a limited time to visit Spiti Valley if you are going through the Manali route.
- The Kinnaur route to Spiti Valley is very different from other hill station tours. The places that you will visit on this Shimla to Manali road trip are not as crowded as other Himalayan hill stations. On the contrary, you will see very few tourists on this route, and most are the ones who are on trekking or camping expeditions.
- The Lahaul Spiti travel package offers authentic experiences of Tibetan Buddhism and Tibetan culture. Right from visiting Tibetan monasteries to exploring some of the high-altitude villages, there is a wide spectrum of experiences on this tour.
Spiti Valley Tour vs Leh Ladakh Tour
Based on our experience, we are giving you a comparison of the Leh Ladakh tour vs the Spiti Valley tour. Though both seem very similar in terms of landscapes and culture, there are some stark differences between the two tours. If you want to choose a Himalayan road trip, and are confused about which tour you should book? Here are some pointers for you.
Accessibility
Ladakh is more easily accessible than the Spiti Valley. You can catch a flight from Delhi to Leh and reach Ladakh very conveniently in just under 2 hours. Once you reach Ladakh, you can stay for 2 days and acclimatize before going on sightseeing trips around Leh Ladakh.
There is no airport in the Spiti Valley. You have two options to reach the Spiti Valley: either from the Shimla Kinnaur route or through the Manali route. Many travellers find this a very adventurous road trip. You should spare at least a week or two to fully cover the Spiti Valley along with Lahaul and Kinnaur.
Road trip
Multiple mountain passes are over 4000 m. You ride through a spectacular cold desert landscape, cross mountain streams, and view vast valleys. The Srinagar Leh Highway has greener landscapes, nomadic villages, and river valleys. The Leh-Ladakh road trip is more about a biking adventure.
The Shimla to Kinnaur route passes through deep gorges and river valleys with occasional apple orchards coming along the route. Gradually, the route transforms into a cold desert from Nako onwards. Each day of this Lahaul Spiti road trip presents a different landscape. You will experience a more varied and diverse landscape view. The Spiti Valley road trip is unbeatable.
Natural Beauty
Spiti Valley has a more subtle appeal, and you can enjoy this gradually, as your Lahaul Spiti bike trip progresses. Enjoy the visuals of monasteries against an evening sky. Or, the changing colors of the Spiti River in the light of the sun.
Ladakh offers striking visual beauty on an epic scale. There are more lakes here, like Pangong Tso, Tso Moriri, and others. The sand dunes of Nubra Valley are strikingly beautiful. You will come across double-humped camels. The Tibetan prayer flags flutter with the flowing breeze in the open landscapes.
Acclimatization
Most travellers have trouble in acclimatization in Leh Ladakh. This is because the altitude gains rapidly, and there is less time for acclimatization. The altitude gain is such that you gain altitude in just 2 hours. This puts the body under tremendous pressure. Travellers need almost 2 days for their bodies to adjust to the altitude. Almost all the places in Leh Ladakh are above 4000 meters, like Pangong Lake (4300m), Khardung La (5300 metres).
In the Shimla Kinnaur route, the altitude rises gradually. From Narkanda onwards, the altitude rises gradually in places like Rampur Bushahr, Sarahan, Kalpa, and Reckong Peo. By staying in these places, you will get enough time for acclimatization. So by the time you arrive at Kaza, you will have trained your body to adjust to the low oxygen of the higher altitudes. The body naturally acclimatizes in this way. So the Shimla Kinnaur route is ideal for travellers who are visiting Spiti Valley for the first time.
Culture and Villages
Though both Spiti Valley and Ladakh have Tibetan culture, there are some obvious differences. Tourists experience unhurried and relaxed sightseeing tours in Lahaul Spiti. Visiting the monasteries is a cultural experience. Even enjoying a meal in a villager’s homestay will give you an experience of its culture and lifestyle. Tourism is a relatively new thing in the Spiti Valley. The experience of visiting Kaza is more rustic.
Tourism is well established in Leh Ladakh. If you visit monasteries like Thiksey, Diskit, and Hemis, professional guides will escort you, and the entry fees are fixed for tourists. The Leh-Ladakh tourist experience is more organized. You will find more restaurants and cafes in Leh than in Kaza.
Accommodation and food
In Leh, you will find many hotels, guest houses, and homestays. These have all the facilities like room heaters, hot water, Wi-Fi, and other facilities. The restaurants in Leh have a wider range of cuisines. There are well-marked tourist circuits that cover major monasteries and heritage monuments.
You will get simple accommodation options in the Spiti Valley. Excluding Kaza, the accommodation is basic and simple. The villages have shared bathrooms, basic facilities, frequent electricity fluctuations, and erratic mobile signals. Food is also very simple and consists of dal, rice, noodles, thukpa soup, momos, and Maggi.

Best Time to Visit Spiti Valley: Choosing the Right Season for Your Journey
Before you plan the Shimla to Lahaul Spiti tour, it is important that you have a general idea about the weather and climate in Spiti Valley. Spiti Valley is chillingly cold during the winter season. Heavy snowfall covers the mountains and valleys in a thick layer of snow. Spiti, basically, is not a year-round destination. However, each changing season brings in a new dimension to the Spiti Valley. The valley gets transformed in every season, and this is the true magic of Spiti Valley.
Spiti Valley in Summer (May to June): Perfect for First-time Travellers
The regions like Kinnaur, Lahaul, and Spiti open up during the summer time. Roads become accessible, and sightseeing is possible. Daytime temperatures are pleasant, and the clear skies make the entire landscape visible with the naked eye.
Peak Season (July to September): Best for Complete Exploration
The peak season is from July to September, and this is when Kinnaur, Manali, and nearby regions truly reveal their natural beauty. The mountain passes like Baralacha La, Kunzum, and Shinkula are open for tourists. High altitude lakes like Chandratal Lake, Suraj Tal, and Deepak Tal are free of snow and ice. This is the best time to plan the Lahaul Spiti tour package from Shimla.
Winter (October to April): For Extreme Adventure Seekers
Winter in Spiti Valley is a chilling time when the temperature is in the range of -15 to 30 degrees Celsius. The villages, mountains, and valleys are covered in snow. Chandratal Lake is completely frozen at this time. The mountain passes are not accessible, and the road conditions are not at all good for sightseeing and traveling. However, the landscape is amazingly beautiful. This is a challenging time to visit Spiti Valley and is not recommended for first-time travellers.

Health, Safety & Acclimatization: Preparing for the High-Altitude Journey
Your body will react if you visit such high-altitude places as Lahaul and Spiti. The oxygen in the air is low at such altitudes, and this thinner air makes breathing difficult. This is when you should try to sense the effects of high altitude on the body. Try to sense small symptoms that your body tries to show you when you are ascending up the mountains.
Mountain Fatigue is Real: Listening to Your Body at High Altitudes
Fatigue starts to have its toll on the body at such high altitude places like Lahaul and Spiti Valley. You may experience mild headaches and feel breathless in some places. It is therefore necessary that you should acclimatize to the height of these places. Gradual acclimatization is the best way to minimize the effects of AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness).
Climbing Gradually: How This Itinerary Helps You Acclimatize Naturally
The slow ascent at places like Narkanda, Kinnaur, and Kalpa will let your body adjust to the altitude. When you reach Kaza, you will have acclimated to the altitude. The itinerary of the Shimla to Lahaul Spiti tour is built in such a way that it lets you rest on the route. This rest allows the body to gently adjust itself to the high altitude of these places. It starts to adapt to the low oxygen atmosphere, and breathing becomes easy.
Hydration, Rest & Rhythm: Simple Habits That Make a Big Difference
It is essential that you develop some healthy habits for this Shimla to Lahaul Spiti tour. Things like drinking water and staying hydrated will benefit you. You should avoid overexerting yourself and have light meals and proper sleep.

All these are thrilling things that make the journey more unforgettable.
Not Your Regular Drive: Navigating High-Altitude Terrain Safely
The drive can be unpredictable, and you can encounter landslides, too. It is a challenge to drive on such type of roads. The terrain is not plain lands, but high altitude mountains with zigzag mountain passes. If there is fresh snowfall, then it may jam the road. You can sense thrill and difficulty at the same time.
Choosing the Right Vehicle: Why Power and Reliability Matter
Driving is a challenge in these Himalayan destinations. It is more challenging in high altitude places like the Lahaul Spiti Valleys.
